Hygrometer, naar/after John Leslie (1800)

Dit instrument is bedoeld om licht, warmte en infraroodstraling te meten. Het is ontwikkeld door John Leslie, die veel onderzoek deed naar stralingswarmte en probeerde wetmatigheden in het verschijnsel te ontdekken. Daarnaast keek hij ook naar overeenkomsten tussen het gedrag van warmte en licht. Het instrument bestaat uit twee glazen bollen. Ze zijn met elkaar verbonden door een u-buis die een gekleurde vloeistof bevat. De ene bol is met enkele laagjes zijde bekleed, de andere is van donker gekleurd glas. Het bekleedsel wordt bevochtigd met water en in de wind gehouden. Het water verdampt dan en onttrekt daarbij warmte aan de bol. De lucht in die bol koelt daardoor af en krimpt, waardoor het vloeistofniveau in de buis eronder stijgt. Het verschil in vloeistofniveau tussen beide benen van de u-buis is een maat voor de luchtvochtigheid. Deze kan worden afgelezen op de schaalverdeling van 0 – 90 tussen de benen van de u-buis.
This instrument was designed to measure the intensity of light, heat and infra-red radiation. It was devised by John Leslie, who investigated radiant heat and tried to discover fundamental laws for this phenomenon. Furthermore, he looked into the similarities between the behaviour of heat and light. The instrument consists of two glass bulbs. They are connected to each other by a U-tube containing a coloured liquid. One bulb is covered with several coats of silk, the other is of dark-coloured glass. The silk is wetted with water and held in the wind. The water evaporates and withdraws heat from the bulb. The air in the bulb cools down and shrinks, thus causing the fluid level in the tube below to rise. The difference in fluid level between both legs of the U-tube is a measure for the air humidity. It can be read from the scale, from 0 – 90, between the legs of the U-tube.
