As from 1800 more and more research was done into the thermal properties of gases. One of the objects of study were the large temperature differences generated when a gas expanded quickly or was compressed quickly. When compressed, for example, a sudden heat was generated. This phenomenon was first observed by a workman in an arms factory. He noticed that a piece of linen in the barrel of an air gun started burning because of the fast air displacement. To study and demonstrate this phenomenon, devices like these were developed: so-called fire pumps or fire pistons. They consist of brass or glass tubes with a tinder, a highly inflammable substance, at the bottom. This is ignited by compressing the air in the cylinder very fast. In 1805 the Paris firm of Dumotiez brought the device on the market for the broad public, followed by the firm of Dubois in Lyon (1806) and Richard Lorentz in London (1807).
