Demonstratietoestel voor hydrostatische druk

De druk die een vloeistof uitoefent op de wanden en de bodem van het vat waarin het zich bevindt, noemen we de hydrostatische druk. Voor de berekening van de vloeistofdruk op een bepaald punt is alleen de hoogte van de vloeistofkolom erboven van belang. Opmerkelijk genoeg is de vorm van het vat waarin de vloeistof zich bevindt hier niet op van invloed. Dit toestel dient om dit principe te demonstreren. De onderste goudkoperen cilinder kan worden afgesloten met een dunne, goed passende schijf. Deze is via een draad door de smalle buis verbonden aan de arm van een weegschaal. Als de buis is gevuld met water kan de waterdruk op de schijf worden gecompenseerd door gewichten aan de balansarm te hangen. Daarna vervangt men de bovenste koperen buis door één van de zwartgelakte cilinders met dezelfde hoogte en herhaalt men de proef. Nu zal blijken dat de schijf op zijn plaats gehouden kan worden met exact hetzelfde gewicht. Hoewel de cilinders en de smalle buis in vorm verschillen, is de waterdruk op gelijke hoogte dus hetzelfde.
We call the pressure that a fluid exerts on the walls and bottom of the vessel it is in, the hydrostatic pressure. To calculate the fluid pressure in a certain point, only the height of the fluid column above matters. Remarkably, the shape of the vessel the fluid is in, has no influence on the pressure. This instrument is to demonstrate this principle. The bottom brass cylinder can be closed off with a thin, smooth fitting disk. The disk is connected by a wire running up the tube to the arm of a balance. With the tube full of water the water pressure on the disk can be counterbalanced by putting weights onto the balance arm. Then the upper brass tube is replaced by one of the black cylinders with the same height and the experiment is repeated. The experiment will show that the disk can be held in place with exactly the same weight. Although the shape of the cylinders and the narrow tube differ, the water pressure on the same height is equal.
