PIETER BARBIERS Pzn. (Amsterdam 1749-1842 Amsterdam)

Pieter Barbiers Pzn. (II) was a pupil of his father Pieter Barbiers (1717-1780). He was a painter of wall hangings depicting wooded landscapes reminiscent of those he studied in the provinces of Brabant and Gelderland, and dune landscapes such as those around Haarlem. When painted wall hangings began to loose their popularity around 1800, Barbiers began to make paintings, drawings and prints of landscapes. His drawing style, like that of Egbert van Drielst# and Paulus van Liender (1731-1797), is elegant and decorative, while remaining within the bounds of naturalism. He is the best-known artist of the family: much work is attributed to him.
Barbiers, known in his old age as the ‘Nestor of Dutch painters’, had a great many pupils, such as Jan Hulswit#, Johannes Jelgerhuis#, Carel Lodewijk Hansen#, Daniël Kerkhoff# and Barent Hendrik Thier#.

Forms a pair together with No. 9. Hendriks bought this pair of drawings directly from the artist, possibly on commission, in 1791. The drawings can therefore be dated in 1791 or earlier. They are good examples of Barbiers’ early landscape style. The artist, who lived to the ripe age of 93, rarely dated his work, therefore it is difficult to establish a chronology of his oeuvre.
