This would appear to be a copy after an untraced study for the Madonna della Rosa of c. 1529 in Dresden. A late eighteenth-century etching and aquatint by Giovanni Battista Frulli reproduces what may be the original drawing, then in the collection of the Bolognese artist and collector Carlo Bianconi (Popham, 1971, I, p. 248, no. O.R. 16; pl. 232). Our copyist misinterpreted the right hand of the Child, summarily rendered in the print, and omitted the table and curtain.
On the basis of the sketches on the verso, a date in the seventeenth century may be suggested.
