The purpose of the composition, which illustrates Acts xiv:14-
16, is not known. Van Regteren Altena suggested the attribution
to Grimaldi, subsequently confirmed by Chiarini (notes
on the mount). The drawing was done in various stages: the
figural scene was complete when Grimaldi added the cluster of
trees and architectural fragments in the right foreground, partly
covering the previously drawn and shaded steps. He used the
same pen in a darker ink to add accents to some of the figures.
